Birm Media For Iron Removal Filter is efficiently helps to remove the iron and manganese from the raw water. It may be used by both gravity fed or pressurized water treatment systems. It acts as insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen and the iron compounds. In ground water dissolved iron is normally in the ferrous bicarbonate state due to the excess of free carbon dioxide and is not filterable. Birm acts as a catalyst between the oxygen and soluble iron compounds and enhances the oxidation reaction of Fe++ to Fe+++ and produces ferric hydroxide which precipitates and is easily filtered. Birm is easily cleaned by backwashing to remove the ferric hydroxide and regeneration is not required. Manganese greensand is a purple-black filter media used for remove the soluble iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide present in the water.It works by oxidation and filteration method. It also has the capacity of removes the arsenic present in the water. It is processed from the mineral glauconite that is zeolite. Using iron exchange properties of this natural zeolite, a manganese dioxide coating is deposited on the surface of the glauconite grains. The manganese dioxide acts as a catalyst in the oxidation reduction reaction of iron and manganese. The media can be used in two ways: continuous regeneration (CR) and intermittent regeneration (IR).
Soluble iron and manganese are oxidized and precipitated by contact with higher oxides of manganese on the greensand granules. The hydrogen sulfide is reduced by oxidation to an insoluble sulfur precipitate. Precipitates are then filtered and removed by backwashing process. When the oxidizing capacity power of the Manganese Greensand bed is exhausted, the bed has to be regenerated with a weak potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution so that it restores the oxidizing property. It is required to continuous backwash and regeneration of the bed when it is placed in service and before its oxidation capacity is totally exhausted. Operating the bed after oxidation capacity is exhausted will reduce its service life and may cause staining. -
